Don’t let your job kill you!

Auto Date Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

How many of you spend hours in front of your computer every day working on project after project for your boss, putting money in your boss’ or company’s pockets, completing the work of two or three people in the course of a day and feel yourself slowly putting on the pounds?

How many times have you skipped lunch or just grabbed a candy bar from the vending machine so you could finish your work and clock out on time?

Take a look around your office and see how many other people are in your the very same boat as you are….who’ve put on countless pounds since they started working with you.

Your company may even offer you health insurance but what your company should be doing is offering to stop its slow, methodical drain in your energy, in your health and just STOP KILLING YOU!!

If your company offers a discount on a gym membership…..then great for you!  But for those of us struggling to find time in the day just to grab a bite to eat, what’s the benefit of a gym membership if you don’t have any time to go to the gym.

For the majority of us who work for companies who don’t have fitness centers on site, who don’t subsidize fitness or gym memberships and who don’t give you more than a few minutes each day for breaks then you’ll just have to take matters into your own hands and make the time to get more active while you’re at work.

Here’s how I fight back when it comes to getting the exercise my body needs:

1.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator when going up less than 3 flights.

2.  Use a restroom that’s farther away from my office to add an extra couple hundred steps each day.

3.  Have walking meeting with colleagues—instead of sitting down for a brief 5 to 10 minute meeting I conduct a mobile meeting killing two birds with one stone.

4.  Keep a supply of water under my desk so I can still get my 64 ounces of water in a day.

5.  Keep healthier snacks on hand, like rice cakes or multigrain bars to avoid going to the vending machine for a candy bar.

This is only a small list of the things that I do to stay active during my workday.  I’ll be darned if I’m going to let my job be the death of me.  Little Rufus needs his mommy so his mommy is fighting hard each day to get healthy and stay healthy.

So join me in fighting back.  Make exercise an integral part of your workday and you’ll notice more energy, more productivity and a better sense of wellbeing.

The most common mistake you’ll make when losing weight….

Auto Date Monday, February 5th, 2007

It’s not the diet plan…even though most fad diets are destined to fail because they’re either so restrictive that you can’t possibly follow them or so ridiculous that you’ll probably end up gaining weight instead of losing weight.

It’s not your exercise program….although most people wind up spending useless hours in the gym each week going from this exercise machine to that machine doing a few reps here and there and don’t really get a full body workout that could take them only 30 minutes each day if they’d use the turn-key tool that I used to burn away the fat in just 3 months after having my son.

And it’s not even the amount of carbohydrates, protein or fat in your daily food plan….although eating balanced meals without completely restricting or cutting out the carbs, protein or “good” fat will lead to the most sustained and steady weight loss than eating only one over the other.

But the most common mistake you’ll make when losing weight is picking the wrong weight loss partner

Now why is this?

Have you ever noticed that many business partnerships usually fail?

Do you know why?

Because many people go into business with one another for different reasons.  Maybe one wants to be altruistic and help others at any cost…not caring about the bottom line.  And the other partner is all about the Benjamins($)…focused soley on the bottom line.  No matter how well intentioned they both may be if these business partners don’t come together and focus on a common goal, the relationship, the business, and the partnership will fail.

And just like a failed business partnership, if YOU pick the wrong weight loss partner, the wrong workout buddy, the wrong support system….you will fail TOO.  So don’t get stuck on the losing team.  Learn to recognize the key features of a successful weight loss partner right from the start.

This weight loss partner should have similar fitness, weight loss, and health goals as you.  Pick someone who’ll understand your busy schedule.  If you work full-time and have kids then a partner who doesn’t work at all or doesn’t have kids may not fully understand the demands on your time and may not be able to give you the support you need to balance the demands on your time.

So choose your weight loss partner carefully…..Because that partner will stand between you and your new sexier, firmer, healthier body.

So Who’s Your Daddy?

Auto Date Friday, February 2nd, 2007

Or better stated…so who’s your doctor?

I mean who do you call when you have a medical question, a question about your medications or a question about your medical problems?

Who do you call when you have a pain or ache that just won’t go away?

Who do you call when you need advice about what types of food you should eat or what food you should avoid because of your high blood pressure or high cholesterol?

Years ago the question “So who’s your daddy?” would have been appropriate given the paternalist and almost authoritative stance of medicine.  But my, how things have changed.  Now people and patients have a choice of who they pick as their doctor and medicine is coming back to its roots, back to being patient-centered and patient friendly.

You wouldn’t keep going back to a doctor who constantly berated you and told you “You’re fat” or “You’ll never get your blood pressure under control because you can’t stop eating all that junk food.”  Now these very authoritative and almost obnoxious doctors still exist because I can personally say that I’ve trained with some of these doctors whose bedside manner is non-existent.

But you don’t have to accept this belittling at the hands of your doctor.   You have a choice of who’s your doctor and even if you’re part of a managed care plan you typically have several doctors in your area to choose from.

I know from personal experience that I won’t learn anything or even listen to anyone who doesn’t take my concerns into consideration.  Sometimes if you express your concern an individual can change the way they speak with you or even tone down their criticisms but often you’ll have to just leave and walk away.

If you find yourself in a relationship, it could be between you and your doctor,  between you and your teacher or even between you and your significant other, where your thoughts and your concerns are not fully appreciated or respected now’s your time to stand up and ask that your feelings and thoughts be taken into consideration.  Don’t settle for less than the best.  When it comes to your health, you need someone you can talk to.  Someone who you can communicate with freely without fear of persecution.  Someone who will give their undivided attention and answer your questions without judgment.

If you don’t have such a doctor, don’t worry because the Health and Wellness Queen is here to be that ear, to listen to your concerns and give you honest answers to your questions.  So feel free to contact me with your concerns and questions.  Don’t wait.  Get your questions answered NOW!  Simply post your comment or question and I’ll provide you with the information you need.
