So Who’s Your Daddy?

Or better stated…so who’s your doctor?

I mean who do you call when you have a medical question, a question about your medications or a question about your medical problems?

Who do you call when you have a pain or ache that just won’t go away?

Who do you call when you need advice about what types of food you should eat or what food you should avoid because of your high blood pressure or high cholesterol?

Years ago the question “So who’s your daddy?” would have been appropriate given the paternalist and almost authoritative stance of medicine.  But my, how things have changed.  Now people and patients have a choice of who they pick as their doctor and medicine is coming back to its roots, back to being patient-centered and patient friendly.

You wouldn’t keep going back to a doctor who constantly berated you and told you “You’re fat” or “You’ll never get your blood pressure under control because you can’t stop eating all that junk food.”  Now these very authoritative and almost obnoxious doctors still exist because I can personally say that I’ve trained with some of these doctors whose bedside manner is non-existent.

But you don’t have to accept this belittling at the hands of your doctor.   You have a choice of who’s your doctor and even if you’re part of a managed care plan you typically have several doctors in your area to choose from.

I know from personal experience that I won’t learn anything or even listen to anyone who doesn’t take my concerns into consideration.  Sometimes if you express your concern an individual can change the way they speak with you or even tone down their criticisms but often you’ll have to just leave and walk away.

If you find yourself in a relationship, it could be between you and your doctor,  between you and your teacher or even between you and your significant other, where your thoughts and your concerns are not fully appreciated or respected now’s your time to stand up and ask that your feelings and thoughts be taken into consideration.  Don’t settle for less than the best.  When it comes to your health, you need someone you can talk to.  Someone who you can communicate with freely without fear of persecution.  Someone who will give their undivided attention and answer your questions without judgment.

If you don’t have such a doctor, don’t worry because the Health and Wellness Queen is here to be that ear, to listen to your concerns and give you honest answers to your questions.  So feel free to contact me with your concerns and questions.  Don’t wait.  Get your questions answered NOW!  Simply post your comment or question and I’ll provide you with the information you need.
